Al Jazeera and CNN - 1741 Words

The issues that accompany the differences of not-profit and profit media outlets have developed exponentially in the last decade, in which profit media has become more concentrated and there has been an increasing need for not-profit media outlets, such as Al Jazeera. The Cable News Network (CNN) is a profit media giant based out of the United States and has been a leader in domestic and international news since it’s creation in 19801. Al Jazeera is a not-profit media outlet that has provided an unbiased opinion and has been recognized on an international level in the recent years following their reports on Osama Bin Laden in 20012. Al Jazeera has rose from an independent Middle Eastern news outlet to a news outlet that is recognized as a leader in media broadcasting on a global scale without the pu sh from large corporations and advertisers. The experience of visiting the CNN website, with intentions of watching a similar news cast or informative programing, was extremely different than visiting the Al Jazeera website. The CNN website is cluttered and over stimulating with clusters of videos on a vast array of topics with no clear focus. Many videos were examples of yellow journalism such as the top two trending videos that consisted of a â€Å"Model’s Shocking Transformation† and a program on photo editing asking â€Å"Has this Photo Editing Gone too Far?† Both of these videos had their pictures presenting images of slim, Caucasian, women in revealing bikinis. Once refocused on finding an informative program of substantial length it came to attention that a longer program of information on something similar to that of Al Jazeera’s, such as human rights or general policy, doesn’t exist on the CNN website. All of the video clips offered on the website are short clips ranging from thirty seconds to just under ten minutes that have been taken from full length programing from CNN television.
